There's a useful analogy from infrastructure. Traditional data architectures were designed around the assumption that storage was the bottleneck. The industry moved toward decoupling storage and compute, letting each scale independently, which is how we ended up with architectures like S3 plus ephemeral compute clusters. The bottleneck moved, and everything reorganized around the new constraint.
